Shape in Art
Shape is another element of design that can be used alone, or with the other elements to communicate a concept and create art. Shape can be defined as any element that's used to determine form. It is "an area that stands out from the space next to or around it". This may be due to a difference in color, texture or value.
Generally speaking there are two different types of shape: mechanical and organic.
Mechanical shapes are geometric in nature. They have sharp edges and can be drawn with a ruler or compass. These shapes can give a piece of art the feeling of control and order.
Organic shapes are ones that are drawn freehand. They are complex, and usually found in natural objects found in nature. These shapes can give a piece of art a more natural, less-controlled feeling.
